SW Florida Home Builder Discusses Great Room v. Family Room

Great room or living room and family room, which suits your lifestyle better? Florida builders may not have invented the great room concept, but they have perfected it, according to SW Florida home builder Paul Homes. The great room concept has been with us for centuries – medieval castles all had a great hall – a central living space where most castle life took place. While Florida builders embraced this concept as early as the 1950s, the rest of the country caught on during the last decades of the 20th century.

Located at the center of the home, the great room combines the functions of many smaller rooms – living room, family room and study – in one open space. The great room works well with a casual lifestyle – that one large, open living and play area that replaces the more traditional formal living room, dining room, and family room. “We’ve been building great room homes for as long as we’ve been in business,” says SW Florida home builder Gary Paul. “In the early years, they were a departure for many of our customers who were moving to Southwest Florida from up north. They invoked a more casual lifestyle which fit with a retirement home or a vacation getaway.”

“Today, most of the homes we build continue to feature a great room, along with an expansive lanai for true indoor/outdoor living,” Gary says. “But some of our buyers still prefer the formal living room along with a casual family room. For these buyers, our idea home is The Ashford model. This home incorporates all of the traditional rooms, with a central kitchen and the living and family rooms opening to this space.”

Like all Paul Homes models, The Ashford is the place for a traditional buyer to start. “If you like the general floor plan but see the need for an additional bedroom, or bath, or even a second floor, we can design it for you, using the model as a base. Our homes are all engineered to allow for some customization, and we encourage you to make the home your own, Gary concludes.
